What’s up with Saul’s horns?

It’s a retcon!

The first thing that ever existed in this comic was Saul; his design was originally just human, and then with a few more elements to what would would eventually become Monochrome, he got twisty horns. As I began to build a whole world for him and his new friends to live in, I built a lore around demon horns that we’ve barely touched on but I didn’t develop it as much as would have been optimal before I started the comic* and therefore didn’t compare Saul’s horns to what I settled upon. It is now at his chapter where I’m making sure I have all my ducks in a row for his backstory that I’ve had to realize his horns, which I already recognized were stretching what I had invented, actually plain were a continuity error and I was going to have to make an obvious edit. So here it is. His horns have always looked like this, I just messed up earlier.

*Honestly there was a LOT that I could have and probably should have ironed out before I started the comic, but like, here’s the thing: my neurodivergent behind will dither with planning infinitely and indefinitely, or WORSE and more likely, get knee deep into planning and then abruptly lose all interest. The best way for me to keep a project alive is to kick it out of the nest before its wings are totally developed and hope they grow fast enough that we don’t faceplant into the ground. So that’s what I did. And I knew that would inevitably mean retcons. I’ve been working like crazy (especially with my writing group) to stitch those wings together so there aren’t major plot holes. I feel… cautiously optimistic about that. And honestly, if this is my first retcon, I feel like I’m doing well, because if the first issue is a design error and not, say, A MAJOR PLOT POINT, then like, okay! I can handle this! It’s not really a big deal, it’s just, with the rules for how demon horns grow, Saul’s should be twisty, spiky, and kinky. (I was originally hiding the spikes inside his horns, and gonna point it out in this chapter – that’s still the plan, but now with the kinks, you can see a couple of lil spikes if you look close and in my lineart style, they’ll be more obvious.)

Anyway thank you for your patience as we get back online, thank you for reading, and thank you for your forgiveness of small retcon-necessitating errors like not drawing Saul’s horns according to rules that haven’t even been fully introduced yet (ha ha…)

And with that, on to Chapter 5!
